♥ Steam Punked ♥ CT Tutorial for Mellie Beans featuring her PTU kit Steam Punked

This tutorial was created with PaintShop Pro X4 but can be done with other versions and/or programs.

Supplies:

Artist's Tube of choice: I am using the FTU work of Cris Ortega. Please Cris graciously lets us use her art as general permission. Please abide by her TOU. You can find her artwork HERE 

Scrap Kit of choice: I am using the wonderful PT kit Steam Punked by Mellie Beans. You can find this kit here

Brush of choice: A cool lookin retro circle brush. All kinds found on Deviant Art!

Fonts of choice: I am using FFF Galaxy for the © and ARRR Matey BB for the name/text.

Filters of choice: Xero – Radiance and Porcelain, Penta.com - Jeans

Ok, grab a cuppa, and a munchie, and let's go!!

Please remember to SAVE your work often, RENAME your layers, and if you feel you have really messed up.... Remember that UNDO is your bestest friend!!

Abbreviations

C/P – Copy and Paste

DS = Drop Shadow

MV – Merge Visible

Create a new image 800x800, transparent background, 72dpi/ppi. Go to Save, name and place the file wherever you wish.

C/P frame 1 as a new layer.

With your magic wand select inside the frame. Selections>Modify>Expand. Expand by 3px.

Create a new layer and drag the layer under your frame layer.

With your flood fill tool choose a color from your tube. I chose a dark muave color. Flood fill the selection.

C/P paper 4 as a new layer. Selections>Invert and hit delete on your keyboard. Invert again. Set the layers blend mode to multiply

C/P your tube as a new layer above your Paper layer. Position to your liking. Selections>Invert and hit delete on your keyboard. Apply Xero Radiance.

Close off your Frame layer and MV. Use a filter on this new merged layer, if you so desire. I used Penta.com – Jeans

C/P and paste your tube on top of the frame and position to the left.. Resize down to your choice.

Copy and paste elements 22, 28, and 29. Resize each element down to choice and layer as you like to hide the flat edge of the tube.

C/P element 20. Resize way down and with your eraser tool erase the ear stems of the glasses and position the elements as if they are resting on the chest.

C/P element and resize down to your choice. Drag the layer under the tube layer so that it sits behind the tube but on top of the frame. See my tag for position. Selections>Float>Selections>defloat. Click on your tube layer to make it active and with your eraser tool erase a bit of the tube to make it look like the chain is coming over her left side. Using the selection will stop your from erasing bits that you don't want to erase.

C/P elements 4 and 13. Resize these way down and layer to your liking. Place them at the top of the chain that sits on the frame.

C/P the word art StTEAMPUNK. Resize down, and rotate. Place on top of the frame just right of the chain.

C/P elements 24 and 11. Resize, rotate and layer to your liking. Keep the compass layer above the frame and drag the flower all the way down in the layers palette so it sits under the frame. Upper right hand side.

Now, let's create a faux mask. C/P a paper of your choice. I chose paper 3. Selections>Select All. Selections>Modify>Contract by about 10 or so px. Selections>Invert and hit delete on your keyboard.

With your eraser tool choose a retro cirlcle brush of your choice. Click all over the canvas with the eraser. UMMM don't go to wild with it you want bits of the paper left. LOL.

Selections>Select All>Selections Float>Selections>Defloat

Selections>Modify>Feather about 10px or so.

Selections>Invert and hit delete.

With a soft eraser brush lightly squiggle over any sharp edges that you might still have.

I also added a motion blur and a gaussian blur to mine. If it looks too large still for your tag use your pick to and resize it down a bit. There ya go, A mask without an actual mask!

Ok, lets resize our image so that we may add our name, ©, and shadows/glows.

Go ahead, resize your image to however you like it.

Close your faux mask layer and MV apply Xero – Porcelain at default settings to whole image. Open mask layer.

Add © info and your name. Export as PNG and you are done!! Woo hoo!

♥ Bewitching Autumn ♥ ~ CT Tutorial ~ Disya's Designs PTU kit Spell Autumn

Animation of choice: I am using animation 151 by Simone. She makes wonderful animations and you can find it HERE

Ok, grab a cuppa, and a munchie, and let's go!!

Please remember to save your work often. Always remember to name your layers. If you feel that you have messed up UNDO is your bestest friend!

First let's open up our tube. Right click on it and Duplicate. Close the original. We do this because if you take a look at the Image Size, our tube is saved at 300dpi. Since we are using it for the web, and the fact that artist usually consider using anything larger a big no no, we have to resize it. We Duplicated it so we wont resize our original tube.

So if you haven't already, Right click on the image window and choose Image Size. Note the original dimensions of the image ( 767 x 1000 ). Change the Resolution from 300 to 72, then change the width and height back to 767 x 1000 px. Minimize your tube for the time being.

Open Paper2 from the kit. Duplicate and close the original. All the elements in this kit are saved at 300dpi too. This means we have to resize this paper the same way we did our tube. The good news is that once we resize the paper, we wont have to resize any more elements because we are going to use the paper for our entire canvas. So go ahead and resize the paper now.

Right click once again on the paper's window and this time choose Canvas Size. Change the size of the canvas to 900 x 900 px. I know it is big but we will resize later. Drag your canvas window out a bit so you can see your canvas.

Grab your eraser tool, and with a really soft setting, run your eraser around the straight edges of the paper so that it looks feathered. Do as little or as much as you want.

On the left hand side of the paper, I wanted some of the tree to hang out, but I didn't want to take the time to cut out the background, so guess what?? I cheated LOL! Drag and drop element 17 onto your canvas. Position the tree right on top of the tree in the paper. In the Blending Options put a drop shadow on the tree you can use my settings, or settings of your own.

Bring up your tube, and drag and drop it onto your working canvas. Go to Image>Free Transform>Scale and while holding Shift+Ctrl drag a corner to scale down your tube to a size that you prefer. Don't forget to hit the checkmark to apply your transformation. Poisition where it suits you best with the Move Tool.

Go to Filter>Sharpen> then Filter> Xero – Porcelain and apply it with the default settings. The Filter>Alien Skin Eye Candy 5>Perspective Shadow, with these settings

Onto the elements! I wont get into all the elements that I placed, as you see there is a lot! LOL! Drag and drop each element that you wish to use. Resize them as you like. Rotate them if you wish. Move layers around. Do what ever you want! This is only a tutorial after all. Let it all be your own. If you use sparkles or the dreamy leaf spray use hard light or a different layer blend mode to give it some lighting effects.

Got everything where you want it? Good! Let's take a last look at our tag and add some drop shadows to add more depth... Add drop shadows to some or all of your layers, it is up to you. I usually use a large soft black shadow on most of my layers.

Now before we animate, we need to resize our image. Go to Image>Trim and make sure that Transparent Pixels, Top, Bottom. Left and Right are all ticked, then hit ok.

Right click on the canvas window and choose Image Size, and resize your image to what you prefer. I changed my largest size down to 750 px.

Add your © info and your name. Add whatever styles you would like to them.

If you are not animating your tag, you can stop here! File>Save for Web as PNG-24 and you are the proud owner of a new siggie!!

If you wish to animate please continue on......

Create a new layer and with your Paint Bucket flood fill that layer with whatever background color you want it to have. I chose the same color as my blog's background color. Drag the layer all the way down to the bottom.

Now to the animation! I usually send you to Rebel Dezigns but I am gonna try explaining this on my own this time. Bare with me.......

First we need to make sure our Timeline is open. If it isn't go to Window>Timeline, and it should now be at the bottom of your workspace. Click on the button that says Create Frame Animation.

On your image. Click on the layer, in the layers palette, where you want your animation to be ABOVE. I wanted mine to be behind everything but above my paper layer ( obviously LOL ) So. I clicked on the paper layer.

Open up your animation. If you are using the same one as I am it should be animation 151 the autumn leaves. You want the PSD version, not the MNG. Click on your bottom layer in the layers pallete, scroll all the way up to the top layer, and while holding Shift click on the top layer. All your layers should be selected now. Go to Layer>Group Layers.

Right click on the animation's window and go to Image Size. Resize to 300 x 223. You may want to go bigger or smaller. That is all up to you.

In the layers palette, right click on the group and duplicate. When the pop up window appears, click on the menu arrow and select your tag that you have been working on and hit OK. Your group should now be seen in your layers Palette.

Click on the group layer, and if you look in your palette options you should see a button that says Pass Through, click on that and choose Linear Dodge ( Add ). This will get rid of any unwanted dark shadows in your animation. Now right click on the group and choose Ungroup Layers. Close all your FRAME layers EXCEPT Frame 1.

If you take a look at your animation window you will now see that your 1^st frame is already there. Duplicate that frame by clicking on the Duplicate Selected Frames button at the bottom of your animation window..... It looks like the same icon for creating a new layer in your regular layers palette ( folded piece of paper )

In your LAYERS PALETTE, hide Frame 1 and unhide Frame 2.

Back to your animation ANIMATION WINDOW, duplicate that current frame

Back in the LAYERS PALETTE hide Frame 2 and unhide Frame 3. If you are doing it correctly the Frame in the ANIMATION WINDOW should be the same frame number as the Frame layer in the LAYERS PALETTE.

Repeat for the rest of the 34 frames.

Phew!! the hardest part is over.

With your last frame already being selected in the animation's window, go all the way back to the very first frame, and with your Shift key depressed left click on Frame 1. Click on the the selection arrow for Select Frame Delay Time and choose 0.01. Next click on the Select Looping Options button ( just under where you just changed the delay time ) and choose Forever.

Click on Frame 1 so that it is the only frame selected and go to File>Save for Web, with these settings

That is it!! You made it my friend!! You are now the proud owner of a new animated siggie!!
